Five years ago, Mary Alice founded a local effort of the global Mother Bear Project, which is a project that has collected and distributed more than 109,000 teddy bears since its inception in 2003. So far, The Villages group of about 25 has made more than 1,000 bears in about five years. Bears are distributed to children in Africa and other emerging countries by Peace Corps volunteers and others working in the HIV/AIDS field. When 100 bears are completed by a member that person receives a beaded pin made by children in Africa and she becomes a member of the 100 Bear Club.
