NEWS

Calling all Tiga fans!

We just heard from H&M that there are still a few organic cotton jackets for sale that Tiga designed for the 'Fashion against AIDS' campaign (blue or beige with white hoodies for men, red or black with white with a high collar for girls). They cost 29.90 euros each and 25% of the net proceeds go to AIDS prevention campaigns coordinated by Designers against AIDS. Run to your nearest H&M to secure one -and if they don't have it there anymore in your size, ask them to order it for you in another store that still might have it.

Thanks for yoursupport!

Belgrade went wild after Ani Lorak's "Shady Lady"

(Picture: AP Photo/Srdjan Ilic)

Eurovision audience couldn't stop clapping after Ani Lorak's (Ukraine) performance at Belgrade Arena last Saturday May 24th. Her exuberant look and breath-taking energy on stage, banged her straight to the 2nd position -after the Russian contestant, who performed at the Eurovision Song Contest for the second time. We kept our fingers crossed till the last vote when Ani eventually got a deserved ovation and honorable position. CONGRATULATIONS Ani!

From DAA we wholeheartedly thank Ani for her personal fight against AIDS and bringing DAA to a massive audience such as Eurovision's, the internationally
acclaimed event that summons families and friends in front of their TV to have a good time, randomly feeling proud of their countries.... while we hope they keep in mind the safe sex factor afterwards too!

*Ani pictured some days before the ESC in a special party -which took place in Belgrade to support her song "Shady Lady" at the contest. She poses in front of Erwin Olaf canvas -DAA's promotional image. The picture was present during the whole event showing the collaboration between Ani Lorak and DAA for the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest.

Ani Lorak brings Designers Against AIDS to Eurovision

Ani Lorak, Ukrainian Eurovision 2008 representative, has joined DAA in her aim to fight against AIDS. In doing so, the singer is planning to use the Eurovision Song Contest, that takes place on the 24th of May, to raise AIDS awareness and to spread a "safe sex" message among the huge audience that watches this popular contest.

Why Ani? She has already served as UN Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS in 2004 and since then she hasn't stopped working to eliminate the stigma  HIV-positive people suffer from through social campaigns. According to Ninette Murk -DAA's founder and Director: "Designers against AIDS are very happy and proud to have found such a strong and convincing partner in Ani Lorak". We feel that such a big event can be really useful to promote the AIDS debate, therefore we are glad to reach out to the Eurovision Contest and fill it with social responsibility!

FAA launch event New York City

At this very moment the 'Fashion against AIDS' event in New York City is taking place in H&M 5th avenue/51st Street, with Rihanna signing and being interviewed by the US media. As none of us could be there, we're being represented by Corinna Springer and Peter Lee, who's being interviewed by a TV crew as we speak. The campaign is looking to be a huge success, with billboards and posters all over NYC and LA and we couldn't be happier!

Fashion Against AIDS launching in Colette!

On Saturday 25th of January we were at Colette (Paris) with some of the artists involved in FAA! Chicks on Speed, Henrik Vibskov, Katharine Hamnett and So Me (Justice) were signing lots of t-shirts to everyone, and we must say that it was a big success! We almost sold out all of them in a crazy afternoon which started with the Chicks performing in Colette's window, using it as an amazing dressing room covered by lipstick messages. They showed every tee to the people outsanding in the parisian Rue St.Honoré and pedestrians enjoyed it that much that they couldn't resist the temptation of having a picture with the girls. After this all our guests signed their t-shirts for almost three hours and, the most important thing, they spread the message! We hope we have reached lots of young people with this special event promoting safe sex and safe life!

Dress Up Against Aids Condom Fashion Show

A multi-coloured gown made entirely from condoms has been unveiled at the 'Dress Up Against Aids Condom Fashion Show' in Kuala Lumpur – said by organisers to be the first of its kind hosted in the predominantly Muslim nation.

About 30 young Malaysian designers showcased their creations, constructed using contraceptives, as part of a campaign to increase awareness of HIV/Aids, which remains a serious issue in the country.
According to the United Nations, the number of cases of HIV and Aids in Malaysia have risen dramatically since the first incidence was reported two decades ago. By the end of 2004, about 64,000 people were recorded to have been infected with HIV, of whom 9,400 had developed Aids.

New figures on HIV/AIDS from UNaids

20071120_epicover3_169.jpg      unaids_logo_en.jpg

2 million people died of AIDS in 2006 and 2.5 million persons were newly infected -this means about 6,800 new seropositive people every day*

Still, changes in behaviour have caused a drop in new HIV infections in certain countries: condoms are less of a taboo in India and Kenyans and Zimbabweans are having fewer sex partners, for example.

The good news is that medications have worked in keeping HIV-positive persons alive. “But this doesn’t mean that the epidemic is going away, that everything is fine and that now we can forget about it — not at all!” says Harvard School of Public Health HIV expert Daniel Halperin. According to the United Nations Aids-fighting agency UNAids, 0.8 per cent – almost 1 out of every hundred adults alive – of all people worldwide is HIV-positive.

In 2007, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis received pledges of only $9.7 billion - half of the amount that it had hoped to raise. “There’s still a huge epidemic out there that needs huge resources so we're able to win the battle,” said Global AIDS Alliance executive director Paul Zeitz.

Everyone has to play a part.
