The UN National Institutes of Health this week announced the results of a study on a vaccine with the potential to protect against HIV infection. 16.000 volunteers -all living in Thailand- received the vaccine, which has now been proven to have cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent. The program ran from 2003-2006.
Although these results seem to be hopeful for finding a efficient vaccine to prevent the infection with HIV in the future, we should still remain careful when it comes to having unprotected sex: the study needs to be examined further and scientists and governments will be debating on further developments of the creation of this efficient vaccine for some time to come.
For now, HIV/AIDS remains a serious disease and although there might be hope for the future (which really excites us!) we must continue to try and prevent unsafe sex and stress the importance of using a condom when having sex.
