My name is Merve, I am a typical 24 year old girl from İstanbul, Turkey. I am studying in the department of political science and international relations. After a long and toilsome visa process finally I came Antwerp yesterday evening and I couldn’t be any happier. I finally did it! Ayke and Peke picked me and my two huge suitcases up from the train station. You know girls, we always have millions of things that we really don’t need but we pack it anyway, just in case! Everybody, Ayke, Peke, Ninette, Mathias and their four cats welcomed me so well at DAA HQ and I spent a much nicer and more comfortable night than I expected. The best part of the night was the letter to me from one of former interns. Thank you Gladys!
Why am I here? Honestly, I don’t know anything about HIV/AIDS but it's a serious issue and that's the reason I'm here. In my country sexual health is not something that's talked on much. As a master’s student of international relations, I realized that I don’t want to turn my back to global issues. I don’t want to be one of the people who are pretending that sexual health is not important because they are not in a high risk group. Hopefully I am not that selfish and stupid! Volunteering at DAA is a great chance for me to raise my awareness and help people by educating them. I want to learn about HIV as much as I can and explore Belgian culture and its multicultural environment. I have a feeling that I will have extraordinary but great memories here.
See you in my new blog entries ! Loves.
Merve -or Merv, as they say here.
